芸 GEI - Geisha’s Educational Insight

芸 GEI - Geisha’s Educational Insight is a 4 member group installation that aims to provide a better understanding of the Geisha in Japan. It seeks to portray the different representation of Geisha from both the Japanese and international perspective. Inspired by the reknown woodblock painter, Kitagawa Utamaro and his woodblock prints of bijinga, we wish to depict the lives of the Geisha just like he did.

For Utamaro, he was able to breathe life into his woodblock prints with the impressions of how the Geisha led their lives in the past. However, there were many misconceptions of the Geisha that had sprung up over time, and 芸 GEI, instead of creating impressions of the Geisha like Utamaro, aims to set about correcting the impressions of the Geisha.

• Interactive Art Installation. 'Host club' tentage set up in school, with game within for visitors to play and understand Geisha concepts.
